All information about JIPMER that you should know


About JIPMER

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research  (JIPMER) is a well reputed medical college in india.
It is located in Pondicherry, capital of union territory of Puducherry in South India.
It is hundred percent  government funded research educational institute as well as a tertiary hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to a large number of patients.
It was established in 1823 as Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry by French invaders.
After 1956, when Puducherry was included in India, the college was renamed as Dhanvantri medical college.
On 13th July 1964; After Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's death, it was renamed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
In 2008, JIPMER was declared as Institute of national importance by an act of parliament.
The whole campus of JIPMER Puducherry is spread across 195 acres of land.
JIPMER is not under control of MCI, it is under direct administrative control of DGHS, Ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India.
It is always ranked in top ten medical colleges of our country and best medical college in south india. 
Motto of the institute is Veritas curat which means truth cures.  
President of jipmer is Dr. V.M. katoch.
Director of jipmer is Dr. Rakesh Agarwal. 
Dean of academics is Dr. R.P. Swaminathan.
Dean of research is Dr. R Raveendran.    
In 2015, a new branch of JIPMER was opened at Karaikal with 50 MBBS Seats.  
So now there are two JIPMER Colleges- one at Puducherry and another at Karaikal.

Courses at JIPMER

There are many courses running at JIPMER Puducherry.

2. Post graduate Courses (MD, MS, Msc. Nursing, Msc. Allied Sciences, Master in Public Health)

7. Certificate courses (Emergency Medicine Technician Certificate Course)

Admission to MBBS Course

Admission is done on the basis of merit list which is drawn based on the marks obtained in entrance test.
The Examination is conducted in online mode (Computer based test), in two shifts (morning and evening shifts).
A total of 200 MCQ questions are asked. Out of which, 60 questions each from physics, chemistry and biology are asked. 10 questions each from English and Logical Reasoning are asked.
Time limit is of 150 minutes. So you need to have great speed of solving MCQ questions.
For each correct response you get +4 marks and wrong answer will cause a negative marking of -1 marks.

Marks are calculated in form of percentile (upto 7 decimals) and higher percentile gives higher rank.
In case of tie between students having same percentile, following strategy is adopted for deciding ranks:
1. Less wrong attempts.
2. Higher percentile in Biology
3. Higher percentile in Chemistry
4. Higher percentile in Physics
5. Higher percentile in English
6. Higher percentile in Reasoning
7. Seniority by age.
This how merit list is made.

Eligibility criteria (for MBBS Course):

1. Minimum age: 17 years.
2. No any upper age limit.
3. Must have passed PCB Subjects with 50% marks (for UR), 40% marks (for SC/ST/OBC).
4. Must have scored 50 percentile (for UR), 45 percentile (for OBC), 40 percentile  (for SC/ST) in Entrance test.

Every year Schedule (MBBS Admissions)

Application form begins: 1st week of March
Application ends: 2nd week of April
Admit Card released: 3rd week of May.
Entrance test date: 1st Sunday of June.
Results: Within one week after exam.
Counselling: 4th week of June (probably 25-26 june) till September.
Batch Starts: 1st of July.

Hostel fees: Rs. 14000 (yearly)

Admission fees: Rs. 4000 (one time only)
Examination fees: Rs. 500 (for one theory paper), Rs. 500 (for one practical paper), Rs. 250 (to get statement of marks).
